Windows 95 vs MS-DOS – part 2

One and most obvious is the graphical user interface, user-friendly . Windows-based commands do not work. The graphical user interface using menus that can be selected with the mouse. Because of this, Windows is easier to use. This ease of use implies the existence of greater computing power. To install and run Windows in acceptable conditions requires 486 or better processor, a memory of at least 12 MB RAM and 350 MB free HDD. DOS needs fewer resources, namely processor 286, 6 MB RAM and about 1 MB per drive.(HDD = Hard Disk Drive represents the computer’s hard disk). Unlike Windows, MS DOS operating system is a working text.MS-DOS operating system has a fairly extensive range of jobs (about 50), with which the user can carry out stock management system. Is apparent bar tasks of Windows at the bottom of the image, the Start button in the top image for mp3 player and some icons (shortcuts) in the left image (top map home ).

For Windows 95 windows have been reduced and integrated tasks bar as you can see the bottom of the image above. Tasks bar is always on the side of the screen, windows not exceeding one ever. If the task bar at the top is links, buttons are all programs that place.
Tasks bar contains programs running in the background. In the left task bar is the “Start” which is a feature of Windows.
The image is clearly apparent that several programs are executed simultaneously; emphasizing the fact that Windows is a multitasking operating system.

It is easy to observe that the computer expects a command. After the string “C: \ Windows>” command can be entered for the following key pressed “Enter” command to be executed.

Another feature offered by Windows 95 is that allow for long filenames. There are no limitation to 8 characters, followed by the development and expansion. Thus, a file name may suggest more than its content. As an example, this document was saved in a file named “MS-DOS VS Win9x.doc.This is possible only under Windows 95. In MS-DOS there is a limit of 8 characters in the filename.
Windows 95 knows to use virtual memory to run larger and more complex programs that require lots of RAM.
A limitation of multiprogramming is that each partition must be able to upload the whole program, because it is resident in memory until its full implementation, such requests will be physically limited internal memory space, in this context is based on virtual memory that only portions of the program needed to be in internal memory, other parts of the program and data can be stored in external memory (i.e. hard disk). Virtual memory system provides the ability to address external memory as if it were an extension of internal memory, giving the illusion of unlimited memory (virtual).
Addresses real or virtual memory locations are indicated by the operating system. If data or instructions are not needed in real memory, when portions of external memory containing data or programs needed are transferred in real memory, while portions of real memory are transferred to external memory (Swapping).
DOS does not know to do the swap and is limited to available RAM.
Windows automatically recognizes devices plug-and-play hardware and automatically installs the appropriate drivers.
